Meet the 2024 CRC Committee!

As the summer season quickly approaches, we wanted to take an opportunity to present our 2024 AMC Cold River Camp Committee (CRCC) members! The CRCC works together alongside the AMC, summer managers, and other key volunteers to ensure everything runs smoothly at Cold River Camp. Cold River Camp would not exist without this volunteer group ~ so if you run into one of our fabulous committee members at camp, please thank them for their hard work. Anyone can join the committee, so if you’d like to learn more, just fill out the volunteer form. We can hardly wait to see you on the Conant Lodge porch this summer!

MaryStarr- Committee Chairperson

MaryStarr is honored to serve as Chair of the volunteer committee who oversee Cold River Camp on behalf of the Appalachian Mountain Club. She comes to the post after five years as communications and marketing team leader - with a lifelong connection to camp, the White Mountains and the AMC. She has broad experience in civic volunteerism and strategic work for non profit and advocacy organizations.

MaryStarr has been making a home away from home at AMC Cold River Camp ever since the summer of 1977 when she had the audacity to interfere with her family’s tradition of attending Echo Lake Camp by being born. Her father Peter was a hike leader at CRC throughout her childhood, and was a beloved outdoors enthusiast and AMC volunteer until the end of his life. MaryStarr grew up in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, hiking with her dad and siblings, and now takes her own family hiking in the Sierra Nevada of California where she makes her home. She is an avid hiker, backpacker and freestyle snowboarder.

In her professional life, MaryStarr is a modern dancer and aerialist, who performs professionally with Flyaway Productions in the San Francisco Bay Area, and a fitness instructor/rehabilitation specialist. She is mom to Ava - a classical vocalist and Yale College sophomore, and Wilder - a big mountain Freeride skier and high school freshman. Her husband Matthew is a chef.

You may have met her as a hike leader, in week 1, 2 or 4, when she comes to camp each summer with her extended family. She is deeply inspired by the community of volunteers that give their time and effort to keep Cold River Camp running smoothly - and is grateful for this opportunity to lead. Reach out to her anytime at crcchair@outdoors.org to share what you love about CRC, ideas for how to make camp a better, more inclusive place and most especially to learn how to become involved in stewardship of CRC yourself.

Ozzy Osborne- Vice Chair

Ozzy serves as the vice chair of the CRC committee and loves the sense of community and camaraderie at camp for families and hikers of all ages. He has been a hike leader for years and enjoys coming to camp with his daughters.

Bob Tucker- Treasurer

Bob serves on the Finance Team as Treasurer of CRC and would have to say that his favorite aspect of the Camp (besides the wonderful location, scenery and hiking opportunities) is the great sense of community and the lasting friendships he has made over the years.

David Graham- Facilities Team Lead

David is the CRC Facilities Committee Chair. His favorite thing about camp is sharing the mountains with the CRC Community. He is a skilled carpenter and can often be found tinkering during his time at camp, helping to make improvements to our beloved buildings!

Miranda Grover- Recruitment Team Lead

Miranda works with the recruitment team that helps to bring new volunteers to every corner of camp including committee members, hike leaders, and work weekend volunteers. She was on “croo” in 2017 and 2018, and returned as assistant manager in 2023. Her favorite things that keeps her coming back to camp year after year is the access to beautiful trails, dark and starry nights, card games in the lodge, the songs of hermit thrushes heard outside of cabin windows, and of course, time spent with friends and family. She currently lives in Argentina, and loves staying connected with the CRC community through the committee!

Mark Weston, Ann Prindle, Emma Huse, Emma Crane, Shelley Gallender, Jon Ordway

Mark Weston- Marketing Team Lead

Mark Weston currently serves as the Team Lead for the CRCC Marketing Team. He also is a member of the Recruitment team. Mark's interests lie in using and applying technology to help keep Campers informed and better connect them to Camp. This includes work supporting and maintaining CRC's website, email lists / mailings, and online registration. Anyone interested in supporting these systems, or has new ideas on how to better support and connect Camp/Campers should reach out to volunteer for CRC today! Mark's favorite thing about Camp is the Baldface Circle Trail on a clear, sunny day.

Ann Prindle

Ann currently serves on four teams; The Recruitment team, Finance Team Lead, AMC’s DEI Committee, and Chair of Conant Lodge Capital Campaign. She has been coming to camp for more than half of her life, and it’s her happy place. Ann cherishes the friendships she has made over the years; that’s what keeps her coming back year after year. That and many favorite hikes to Blueberry Mountain, Mt. Crag and of course Rainy Days and Waterfalls hike.

Emma Huse- Committee Member

Emma Huse serves on the CRCC recruitment team, helping identify other volunteers from within the CRC community. She also volunteers as the Winter Cabin Registrar. Emma's favorite thing about CRC is time with family and friends who are family on the porch after a perfect hike!

Emma Crane- Committee Member

Currently serves on the Recruitment team along with the Land and Waters team and organizes the Wish List and writes thank you’s for donations other than the Capital Campaign. Her memories include sharing Cold River Camp with family and the enjoyment of seeing her grandchildren love the Camp as much as I do.  Favorite cabin - Cox - where she stayed when her four children first came to Camp back in 1972.  Favorite trail - Basin Rim from the Wild River Campground side - two generations have enjoyed making dams below the falls about 1/2 way up the trail - and the view from the ridge!!  Favorite place to relax is the Library - she admits to nodding off more than once in the evening there!!

Shelley Gallender- Committee Member

Shelley is on the Marketing & Communications Team. Her favorite thing about camp is watching her kids grow up there- starting out at ages 8 months and 2 years old during their first summer at camp and now they are 8 and 10. Every summer it feels like we get to go to "summer camp" with the whole family!

(She is also a die hard fan of the CRC fruitcake they put out on the lunch table every summer!)

Jon Ordway- Facilities Team Lead

Jon Ordway was a member of CRC Crew in 1981 and 1983. He began volunteering during prep week in 2015 helping to get camp ready for the season by fixing screens, painting, and making minor repairs. In 2021, he began serving on the Facilities Team and soon after was appointed to the CRC Committee. Jon is a professional civil engineer with over 30 years of experience assessing, characterizing and cleaning up contaminated property. Jon loves outdoor activities including hiking/backpacking, biking, kayaking, and cross country skiing.
